How to install your trolling motor mount

Through-bolt installation on a center console bow deck: 60–90 minutes of work plus a 24-hour sealant cure. If you're comfortable with a drill and basic hand tools, you can do this. Prefer paper? The same guide is available as a printable PDF.

1.Plan and test fit — cardboard first

  • Print the drill template at 100% scale (port / starboard) — verify the printed 1" reference square and 6" ruler measure exact before trusting it.
  • Glue the template to cardboard (~18" × 9"), cut the outline, and punch the DRILL crosshairs.
  • Test-fit on the deck: confirm nothing is behind your drill (fuel lines, wiring, stringers), you have 2–3" of underside wrench access, and the motor clears gunwale, hatches, and rod holders both deployed and stowed.
  • Mark each hole with painter's tape + marker, level the position, and commit.

2.Drill and seal every hole

  • Tape over each mark (prevents fiberglass splintering), pilot with 1/8" (3 mm), then finish at 11/32" (8.5 mm) for a clean M8 slip fit. Vacuum all swarf.
  • Bead 3M 5200 Fast Cure around each hole's perimeter and coat the inside walls of every hole — this is what protects a balsa/plywood/foam core from wet rot.

3.Through-bolt the plate down

  • Set the plate over the wet 5200 and drop an M8 × 1.25 flat-head 316-stainless bolt through each countersunk hole (40/55/65 mm lengths cover 1"/1.5"/2" decks).
  • Underneath, per bolt: a large fender washer (~30 mm OD) — or better, a 1/8" (3 mm) 316 stainless backing plate blank, roughly 2" × 2" with a 3/8" hole. Six small per-bolt blanks spread the load on any deck, so there's no boat-specific plate to fabricate. Then a drop of Loctite 243 and an M8 316 nyloc nut.
  • Hand-tighten all six, then torque to 15–18 N·m (133–160 in·lb) — snug, never crushing.
  • Run a continuous 5200 bead around the plate's full perimeter, top and bottom, and smooth it.

4.Mount the puck, then let it cure

  • Bolt your motor's quick-release puck to the plate using the 1/4-20 hardware that came with the motor, each bolt with a drop of Loctite 243. The plate accepts both 4-bolt and 6-bolt patterns.
  • Wait 24 hours before loading the plate, trailering, launching, or hosing the deck (7 days for standard slow-cure 5200).
  • Every spring: check the six deck bolts, the 5200 perimeter bead, and the puck bolts. Replace anything that shows rust — rusting hardware isn't 316.

Installation FAQ

How do you mount a trolling motor to a center console?+

Through-bolt a mounting plate to the bow deck: test-fit with a printed drill template on cardboard, drill 11/32" (8.5 mm) clearance holes, seal every hole with 3M 5200, then bolt the plate down with M8 316-stainless flat-head bolts, fender washers, and nyloc nuts torqued to 15–18 N·m. Your trolling motor's quick-release puck then bolts to the plate's threaded holes.

What size drill bit do I need for a trolling motor mount?+

Start each hole with a 1/8" (3 mm) pilot bit, then step up to 11/32" (8.5 mm) for the final clearance holes — that gives M8 bolts a clean slip fit through the deck.

What sealant should I use when drilling a boat deck?+

3M 5200 Fast Cure (white). Bead around each hole's perimeter on the deck's top surface AND coat the inside walls of each hole — this seals the deck core (foam, balsa, or plywood) against water intrusion and rot. After bolting down, run a continuous bead around the plate's entire perimeter.

How long after installing before I can use the boat?+

24 hours with 3M 5200 Fast Cure — don't trailer, launch, load the plate, or hose the deck during the cure. If you used standard (slow-cure) 3M 5200, wait 7 days. Fully cured strength is identical.

Should I use 304 or 316 stainless hardware?+

316 (A4) only. It contains 2–3% molybdenum that resists saltwater pitting and crevice corrosion; 304 looks identical but fails over time — and the failure happens inside the bolt body where you can't see it. Quick check: if a bolt is even slightly magnetic, it isn't 316.

Does the Flux mount work with both 4-bolt and 6-bolt trolling motor pucks?+

Yes — the plate's threaded holes accept both 4-bolt and 6-bolt puck patterns, covering Minn Kota, MotorGuide, and most major trolling motor brands. Use the 1/4-20 hardware that came with your motor and a drop of blue Loctite 243 on each bolt.

Do I need a backing plate under the deck?+

Strongly recommended on cored or thin decks. You don't need one custom-shaped plate — use a 1/8" (3 mm) 316 stainless blank, about 2" × 2" with a 3/8" hole, under each of the six bolts (or large ~30 mm fender washers at minimum). Per-bolt blanks spread the clamping load on any boat, which is why a single custom backing plate isn't necessary.

What torque should the deck bolts get?+

Hand-tighten all six bolts first, then torque each to 15–18 N·m (133–160 in·lb). Don't over-torque — excess clamping force can crush a cored deck.

Can I install it with screws instead of through-bolts?+

Only as a last resort where underside access is impossible (closed compartment, foam-injected hull). A 316 stainless self-tapping deck screw holds far less than a through-bolt, so use it only where you must — and still seal the hole inside and out with 5200. Through-bolting is the correct method.
